Padrejtsi Padrejtsi! (Injustica) (Foto)

Messi: Do e kapërcejmë largimin e Guardiolës

Messi: Do e kapërcejmë largimin e Guardiolës

Euro 2012: Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, expects England to contend

Portugal's forward Cristiano Ronaldo gestures at supporters during a training session at Obidos city stadium in Obidos, central Portugal, on May 21, 2012

It’s rare for the captain of a national team to heap such strong praise on a rival ahead of a big tournament.
But then Portugal captain and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo is as rare as they come.

A formidable scorer leading a national team into a tournament where they at least have a better chance at succeeding than at the 2010 World Cup, Ronaldo nevertheless tells the U.K.’s Sun newspaper that he expects big things from England at Euro 2012.

Euro 2012: Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugals captain, expects England to contend

“I always expect England to win a big tournament,” said Ronaldo.
“England have some of the best players in the world and are always tough opponents for any team.
“I hope England do well in the Euros because I have a lot of friends there. It is a country I like a lot.
“I expect big things for England, the new coach and the country.”

Cristiano would know. From 2003 to 2009 he suited up for Manchester United, where he played alongside current national team member Wayne Rooney and snubbed defender Rio Ferdinand, joining with the two players to help the Red Devils win the UEFA Champions League in 2008.

And as regards this squad, Ronaldo may be right. England have a new coach in Roy Hodgson, formerly of West Bromwich Albion, and a roster that includes newcomer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.

There are, at the very least, a couple of game-changers on this roster who could help England contend for their first-ever European championship. And it can’t hurt that four players are still riding the high from winning the Champions League with Chelsea last weekend.

Euro 2012: Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugals captain, expects England to contend

Ronaldo qualifies his statement by saying there are better teams than England. Spain, for instance, as well as the Netherlands and Germany. Italy, too, he says, has a good chance at this year’s tournament.

But Ronaldo shouldn’t sell his own team short. He’s captaining a Portuguese national squad that includes Real Madrid teammates Pepe and Fabio Coentrao. He’ll also have talented Chelsea FC midfielder Raul Meireles and Man United forward Nani.

Their primary challenge, of course, is getting out a group stage in which they have to face Germany and the Netherlands. So they have all the talent and the competition to match it. Maybe praising England was just a good way to avoid talking about his own team’s chances…

It’s a testament to a team’s greatness when it can lose its greatest forward and defender, and still dress a squad capable of dominating an international tournament.
Spain manager Vicente del Bosque announced his squad for Euro 2012 today, and you hardly notice the absences of David Villa and Carles Puyol when you look at the squad that will be counted on to defend their title.

Euro 2012: Spain squad puts Juan Mata, David Silva at forward, shuns Roberto Soldado

Here’s the squad, as reported by Agence France-Presse:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool/ENG), Victor Valdes (Barcelona).

Defenders: Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa, Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos (all Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Valencia), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Javi Martinez (Athletic Bilbao).

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Santi Cazorla (Malaga), Xavi Hernandez, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets (all Barcelona).

Forwards: David Silva (Manchester City/ENG), Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo (both Sevilla), Fernando Torres, Juan Mata (both Chelsea/ENG), Pedro (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao)

If nothing else, this roster reflects the adaptability of Spain’s national team. No Villa? No problem! Del Bosque has simply moved midfielders Juan Mata and David Silva into the forward position. The addition of Pedro Rodriguez is a bit of a surprise, given that he barely played this season, and only well towards the end, but del Bosque was impressed at his performance as Barcelona’s season wound down, so he makes the squad.

So too does Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo, who took the spot that many assumed would go to Valencia’s Roberto Soldado. The breaking point for Soldado was that he scored many goals in the 2011-12 season, but his production waned while Negredo’s got progressively better. It’s surprising not to include Soldado but a smart move by the Spain manager.

Also slightly surprising is that Cesc Fabregas wasn’t included in the forward ranks. Primarily a midfielder, he had to fill in at Villa’s position for FC Barcelona this year but wasn’t always successful in that role. The latest reports say that Fabregas suffered an injury in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao and will have to rest up to 10 days. That may slow down his momentum heading into the Euro but unlike Puyol or Villa he can play the tournament from the start.

Euro 2012: Spain squad puts Juan Mata, David Silva at forward, shuns Roberto Soldado

What’s really interesting about this squad are the midfield and defense. With Xavi, Fabregas, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets all playing together, it’s like FC Barcelona controls the midfield, while Real Madrid controls the defense with Alvaro Arbeloa, Raul Albiol and Sergio Ramos.

There are of course players from other teams playing for Spain, but an interesting question that could face the team throughout the tournament is how cohesive they could be with the Barca-Madrid rivalry reaching the heights it did this season. Recall, for a second, the griping between Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola and Real manager Jose Mourinho, and you get a picture of two teams who have worked very hard at learning to hate and compete with each other.

That could be a difficult psychological boundary to overcome. But with the competition they’ll be facing from teams like Germany and the Netherlands, and Italy in their own group, they must know already that it’s simply something they have to do.

Lescott - No Terry tension

Image text here
Joleon Lescott: Insists there is no animosity in the England squad

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott insists there is no tension within the England squad about the inclusion of John Terry.

Chelsea captain Terry is facing a court case later this year in relation to an allegation that he racially abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand in a match earlier this season. Terry has always denied the charge.
Ferdinand's brother Rio has been omitted from Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2012 amid speculation that the new manager was under pressure to decide between him and Terry.
But Lescott claims there are no divisions in the squad and that England's players are united.

"Definitely not, there is no animosity in the squad," said the 29-year-old.
"We are all here for the same reason and that is to do well for England."

Not easy

Lescott did admit he was saddened by Ferdinand's exclusion but acknowledged it was a difficult decision for the England boss.
"He is a great player and has been a great one for England," added Lescott.
"He is probably one of the players I looked at most growing up. It's a shame he is not in the squad but it was the manager's decision.
"I don't think it was an easy choice to make picking his squad.

Torres happy at Chelsea

Fernando Torres: Chelsea striker determined to succeed at Stamford Bridge

Fernando Torres is ready to fulfil his dreams with Chelsea after admitting he "lost hope" earlier in his time at Stamford Bridge.

The departure of Didier Drogba gives the £50million British record transfer the ideal opportunity to secure his position as first-choice striker after a difficult 16 months since leaving Liverpool.
Torres has still to rediscover the form he showed at Anfield and has scored just 12 goals in his Chelsea career, but he remains confident his best is to come and dismissed claims he was unsettled.

Never surrendered

"At Chelsea I am very happy and I never said the opposite," he said.
"I still have a lot to do in this club. It has been a difficult year, I didn't play much and my mind was like a roller-coaster.

"I believe that I deserved to play more. I felt very bad and I would not like to feel that way again but I have never surrendered and I never will.

"When Chelsea signed me they did it with great expectations, and the confidence of the owner and the fans has been unconditional, but my role in the team has not followed that line.

"I look at myself and think I have not known how to be essential for the coaches I've had and this is another goal to accomplish which I will, at all costs."

Mental block
The Spain international went 24 matches without scoring this season before finally ending his five-month goal drought with two goals in Chelsea's FA Cup quarter-final win over Leicester.
For a player who has excelled at hitting the net at both Liverpool and before then at Atletico Madrid, it became almost a psychological problem.

"It was a mental block, I felt really bad," he told his website, fernando9torres.com

"I felt very well on the field this season because I have become a more complete player but the ball did not fall for me and I felt I was never in the correct position.

"I watched many videos to study the movements of other strikers, including mine from my spells at Atletico and Liverpool.

"It helped me a lot because I lost the fear of being in the area. I want to thank Steve Holland (assistant coach) for the work he did to help me.

"There were times where I lost hope and that has never happened to me before.

"It's the worst feeling in the world when you love your profession and I became the player I hate.
"Luckily it is part of the past. Now all I have in mind is to fulfil dreams.

"I fulfilled a dream (by winning the Champions League against Bayern Munich at the weekend) and I'd say it's a very happy moment but I demand more.

"The best is yet to come. Now we have to keep dreaming."

Didier Drogba will leave Chelsea this summer

Striker Didier Drogba will leave Chelsea this summer after eight years with the club.
The Ivory Coast striker, 34, who scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final victory over Bayern , is set to be a free agent when his Blues contract expires next month.
After months of speculation, Drogba has confirmed he is set to move on.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba
"I wanted to put an end the speculation and confirm that I am leaving Chelsea," he told the club's website.
"It has been a very difficult decision for me to make and I am very proud of what we have achieved, but the time is right for a new challenge for me."
Drogba feels that the Champions League win was a fitting note for his departure.
He added: "'As a team we have accomplished so much and have won every single trophy possible.

Didier Drogba's Chelsea record

  • Debut: v Manchester United, August 15, 2004
  • First goal: v Crystal Palace, August 24, 2004
  • Appearances: 342
  • Goals: 157
  • Honours: Premier League: 2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10; FA Cup: 2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12; League Cup: 2004-05, 2006-07 Champions League: 2011-12
  • Premier League top goalscorer: 2007, 2010
"Saturday was a very special moment for everyone at the club and for all the fans. I am very proud to have played my part in bringing many trophies to this club, which has been my home for the last eight years.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the club, especially Roman Abramovich and my team-mates."
Drogba's contract stand-off dated back to last summer, with the club refusing to bow to his demands for a two-year extension.
Speculation has intensified in recent weeks, after Drogba scored the winner in the FA Cup final victory over Liverpool, and then equalised against Bayern on Saturday before converting the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out.

Drogba's finals goal record

2005 Carling Cup final - scores in extra-time in 3-2 win over Liverpool.
2007 Carling Cup final - scores both goals in 2-1 win over Arsenal.
2007 FA Cup final - scores the only goal in 1-0 win over Man United.
2008 Carling Cup final - puts Chelsea ahead in 2-1 loss to Spurs.
2009 FA Cup final - scores equaliser in a 2-1 win over Everton.
2010 FA Cup final - scores only goal in 1-0 win against Portsmouth.
2012 FA Cup final - scores Chelsea's second in 2-1 victory against Liverpool.
2012 Champions League final - his 88th minute header took the game against Bayern into extra-time before he scored the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

The forward, who joined from Marseille for £24m in 2004, has been linked with a move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
Drogba was one of Jose Mourinho's first signings as Chelsea manager and he has enjoyed a highly successful stint in London.
As well as three Premier League titles, he has won four FA Cups and two League Cups before Saturday's Champions League triumph, scoring nine goals in finals.
He is fourth on the list of Chelsea's all-time goal-scorers with 157 and is also the club's leading scorer in European competition with 34.
Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay paid tribute to the striker.
He said: "Didier is undoubtedly a Chelsea legend and will always be part of the Chelsea family. He is certainly leaving on a high after Saturday night.
"Of course Didier has contributed so much to all of Chelsea's recent successes. He has been a consummate professional during his entire time here. As one of the natural leaders in our squad he has been an inspiration to a lot of our younger players.
"We have known for some time that this outcome was likely but Didier and the club only made a final decision on that in the last couple of days. For obvious reasons neither Didier nor the club wanted to distract focus away from the Champions League final.
"The talks were amicable all the way through and we wish him all the best for the future."

No Gareth Bale to Barcelona deal - Spurs boss Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp has denied Tottenham have agreed a £32m deal with Spanish giants Barcelona for Gareth Bale.

Reports in the Spanish media on Friday suggested the Catalan side were set to pay 40m euros  for the Welsh winger, 22.
"I wouldn't think there's a slightest bit of truth in that," said Redknapp. "Not a chance I wouldn't have thought."

Did you know?

Bale has been picked in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

The Spurs boss insists the north London club want to keep their best players in order to qualify for the Champions League on a regular basis.
"If you don't then where are you going?" said the 65-year-old. "You can forget about Champions League football in the future if you don't keep your best players and add to them, never mind selling them off."
Tottenham will secure a top-four finish by beating Fulham at White Hart Lane in their final game of the Premier League season on Sunday.
Redknapp's side must match fifth-placed Newcastle's result at Everton and could still finish third above neighbours Arsenal depending on the outcome of the Gunners' trip to West Brom.
"We've got to try and get a win ourselves - that's all we can do," said Redknapp, who added he would not be keeping track of Sunday's other scores.

"If we win we're definitely going to finish fourth at least, so we've got to try and win a difficult game. A draw is no good to us.
"We've just got to concentrate on picking up three points. Let's wait and see - it all depends on Sunday."
But Spurs could still miss out on a place in Europe's elite competition if they finish fourth and Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in this year's Champions League final on 19 May.
Redknapp said he would be cheering on the German side in the Munich showpiece should Spurs fail to overhaul Arsenal this weekend.
"You'd be a liar if you said otherwise," he conceded. "If we finish third I'll become an even bigger Chelsea fan."

Dwain Chambers to race over 150m at Manchester event

Olympic hopeful Dwain Chambers has confirmed he will compete at the Great CityGames in Manchester on 20 May.
The British sprinter will race over 150m on a specially-constructed track in the city centre.
Chambers will go up against compatriot Marlon Devonish, America's double world silver-medallist Walter Dix and Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago.
The 34-year-old last week discovered he would be eligible to compete at this summer's Olympics in London.
The Manchester meeting will also see American Sanya Richards-Ross, one of the favourites for Olympic gold over 400m, compete over 200m against a field which includes Britain's 2007 world silver medallist Nicola Sanders.
Chambers served a two-year suspension after testing positive for the steroid THG in 2003 and under British Olympic Association (BOA) rules, he was subject to a lifetime Olympic ban.
But the sprinter is now eligible to compete after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) overturned the BOA's policy of lifetime bans for those who have served drugs bans, giving Chambers the chance to qualify for Team GB.
After returning to the track, Chambers has been the fastest Briton over 100m each year since 2008 and his fastest time of 9.97 seconds (set in 1999) is the second-fastest ever recorded by a Briton, behind Linford Christie.
The Great CityGames in Manchester will also feature the Great Manchester Run and be televised live on BBC2.

Yaya Toure wants Man City to become world's top club

Yaya Toure has told BBC Sport that he wants to help Manchester City become the biggest club in the world.
The midfielder has been a key figure for City, who attempt to clinch the Premier League title this weekend.
He told World Focus: "That's why I came here, to help the team... to help the club go forward and make it bigger than any club in the world."
City host QPR on Sunday and will become champions if they match Manchester United's result at Sunderland.

Asked whether he was feeling the pressure, Toure, who was signed from Barcelona for a reported £24m in July 2010, said: "No, because I have a lot of experience. I have already won some important trophies."
Toure, a member of the Barcelona squad that won all six domestic and international titles they contested in 2009, has been an increasingly influential figure for Roberto Mancini's side this season.
The Ivory Coast international, 28, scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday and also helped City beat neighbours United 1-0 on 30 April.
Toure, who also scored in City's FA Cup semi-final and final victories last season, believes his know-how was one of the main reasons City agreed to pay such a big fee to sign him from Barcelona on a five-year deal.

"I think they made the right choice," said Toure, who once had a trial with Arsenal. "I wanted to come to the club to make a story and my decision was to come to City.
"Of course, some people make some speculation about other things, but, for me, when you are a football player, you always want to go where you can be loved and be the best player.
"At Barcelona, I was a good player but at City I am an important player for the team."
City failed to reach the latter stages of the Champions League this season, but Toure says a first top-flight title since 1968 would be an important step on the road to becoming the biggest club in the world.
"This Sunday coming, we have to deliver," he said. "It's very important."
