Sweden wins Eurovision Song Contest

Sweden's Loreen thanked voters before performing her winning track Euphoria

Favourite Loreen has triumphed for Sweden at the 57th Eurovision Song Contest, with her club track Euphoria.

The former Swedish Idol contestant led from early on in the voting at Baku, challenged only by Russia's Buranovo Grannies, Serbia and hosts Azerbaijan.
British entry Engelbert Humperdinck, who opened the contest with his ballad Love Will Set You Free, finished second from last - despite high hopes.
The 76-year-old said he "did the best for my country".
"I've had many highs in my career and Eurovision has been a wonderful experience," he said.
"I want to thank everybody, especially my fans around the world for their words of support.
"I did the best for my country, the rest was out of my hands."
However, at least the British star was spared the humiliation of 'nil points'.

Poor draw

The crooner, who has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, received just 12 points - from Estonia, Latvia, Belgium and Ireland.
The UK has not won since 1997 and has come last three times in the past 10 years.
There were high hopes for Humperdinck - affectionately known as "The Hump" - given his huge global fanbase, but his draw as first to sing in the contest seemingly proved detrimental.
Viewers often tune in late and miss the early contenders.

Russia's Buranovskiye Babushki
Russia's Buranovskiye Babushki were well received in Baku but it was not enough to clinch a win

Twenty six countries took part in the final in Azerbaijan's spectacular Crystal Hall, in front of a live audience of some 20,000.
Up to 125 million typically watch the annual contest on television around the world.
Loreen racked up a massive 372 points on the leader board, leaving a trail of disappointed contenders in her wake.
A combination of points from televoting and national juries decides the winner.
Each country awards points to 10 competitors based on judges' scores and a public vote, with 12 points being the maximum awarded.
"I love you so much. Thank you for believing in me," the 28-year-old Swede told her supporters, as she took to the stage to sing one final time.
"I wouldn't have been able to do it without you."

Euphoria has already topped the charts in five countries, including Sweden and neighbouring Finland. Norway had the dubious honour of last place.
Bagpipes, blindfolds and water fountains all featured in a typically extravagant contest, as well as a celebrated group of Russian pensioners, who performed Party for Everyone, a cross between a traditional folk tune and a dance track, to rapturous applause.
Ireland, who were represented by Jedward for the second year in a row, came 19th - with 46 points - an unexpected slump on their previous performance in 2011, which saw them come eighth.

Their performance of pop track Waterline closed with the 20-year-old Grimes twins jumping into a fountain in the middle of the stage.

Eurovision Contest: Spain 'Told Not To Win'

As Engelbert Humperdinck aims for a UK victory at the Eurovision song contest this weekend, one country is actually hoping it does NOT win.

Spain's entrant has admitted it would be best if she did not score top marks at the competition as the country would struggle financially to host next year's event.
Singer Pastora Soler told ABC Punto Radio: "If we won, I think it would be impossible to stage the next edition because it costs so much money."

Eurovision protests
There have been protests in the capital of Azerbijan calling for the release of political prisoners

In the lead-up to this year's contest in Baku, Azerbaijan, violent clashes between police and protesters have broken out with 40 people arrested.
The activists are demanding the release of political prisoners and the resignation of the government.
But even within the competition, entrants are worrying about the political and financial problems in their own countries.
Contest rules state that the public broadcaster of the nation that wins must host the following year.

Spanish singer Soler, whose latest album got to number three in her country's charts, will sing her ballad Quedate Conmigo (Stay With Me).

Pastor Soler
Pastora Soler says it is not the right time for Spain to win Eurovision

Directors from Spain's broadcaster, TVE, sent a joke message to her, saying: "Please, don't win!"

The 33-year-old singer told the AFP news agency: "I think it is not the moment, neither for Spain nor for the Spanish public, to win Eurovision."

Spain has won the competition twice, in 1968 and 1969.

On Thursday evening the line-up for the contest was finalised with 26 nations competing in Saturday's live contest.

Alongside veteran singer Humperdinck, Irish twins Jedward are also through to the final with their song Waterline.

Bookmakers William Hill currently have Sweden's entry, Loreen, favourite to win at 5/4 with Russia's singing grannies 5/1 and Serbia and Italy both 10/1.

The UK last won Eurovision in 1997 with Katrina And The Waves' song Love Shine A Light.

Jennifer Lopez Is Leaving American Idol!

Jennifer Lopez may have just been named by Forbes magazine today as the most powerful celebrity, but her reign at American Idol is coming to an end.
While J.Lo has publicly said she has yet to make a decision about her future on Idol, sources exclusively tell me that she she's planning on calling it quits.
"She's just too busy," one source said.
That's so very true.
She's about to launch a mega concert tour with Enrique Iglesias that kicks off this summer in Latin America and the  U.S. She plans to go worldwide in the fall.
I'm told Lopez will be on the road, at the very least, through the end of the year.
The next round of Idol auditions will begin while she's overseas.
The superstar apparently wants to free up her schedule next year, possibly taking a little hiatus from work to be with her kids.
"It is just like any working mom's dilemma," Lopez told us at Monday's premiere of What to Expect When You're Expecting. "It's tough. It's a balancing act. You put them first and then you have all these other things that you have to do, that you have to give your time to as well, and you have to make sure that they're OK in the process."
Fox declined to comment on Lopez's future with the show. Meanwhile, a source close to the production tells E! News that "Fox does not want to let her go. They love her."
Lopez has been on Idol for two seasons with one-year contracts for both. She went home with $12 million the first time around with a nice raise to $20 million for this season.
Now the question is, will Fox try to change Lopez's mind with a much bigger payday?
