Cate Blanchett’s natural beauty

From her first, recognized role as Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth to her most recent character as Lady Marian in Robin Hood, Australian actress Cate Blanchett examples blanch skin to be of importance in playing royal roles. That same pallen complexion made headlines when a Photoshop-free image of Cate graced the cover of The Economist ‘Intelligent Life’ earlier this year. The article, which featured Cate and her role as theatre director at The Sydney Theatre Company, become a celebration of Cate’s creases –  the pride of a woman who has worked, and aged, with grace.

Way back in 2003, when Cate played her role as an Irish crime reporter in ‘Veronica Guerin’, was the only time we’ve spotted the sinewy celeb wearing darker hues on her skin. Here, at the UK premiere for the film, Blanchett wore berry gloss and blush in the same hue to carve out her features. Before that, when Blanchett was ‘Meredith’ in The Talented Mr. Ripley , Cate’s makeup was much lighter and her hair had glistened as a champagne blonde – the only era during which Cate looked quintessentially “Hollywood”. It was when she shaved her head for the film Heaven that Blanchett began emphasizing her natural beauty, a blessing we’ve come to admire on her the most.

Following the release of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Blanchett developed an uneven complexion, an unfortunate fate for an actress famed for her skin, but when a friend introduced her to the Japanese skin care line, SK-II, Cate’s skin perfected and she instantly became an unofficial spokesperson for the brand.
SK-II is still not available in Canada, so you’ll have to place orders with your Japanese friends!

When she won her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Aviator , Blanchett wore two beauty retro-isms: loose waves and splash of colour on her lips. Though we’ve seen her hair change from shaved to long and cinnamon-y and back to a blonde crop, this pink lip is the boldest makeup we’ve seen on Blanchett.

What we really love about Cate is her commitment to common sense. While so many actresses opt for Botox and heavy editing, Cate respects her age and declines to have her photos re-touched. It’s not that her beauty is superior, it’s that she’s sensible. Cate’s approach to beauty – plenty of hydration and regular microdermabrasion is our guess – can be easily translated to a regular lady’s life. For women seeking a beauty icon, Cate’s the actress we’d wish it to be.
