Great or Gauche: Peplums

Between Jason Wu , Armani, Givenchy and Vera Wang pushing peplums down their spring runways, and celebrities ranging from Sofia Vergara to January Jones sexify-ing them at the MET Ball, we’re preparing for a flood of peplums to hit the streets this summer.

Speaking of sexy, you may never have considered peplums to be so. But they are! Peplums date all the way back to ancient Greece when Grecian women wore them to emphasize their waist, an area modern women continue to pronounce. They were popular again in the 1940s, attached at the waist of a ladies fitted suit jacket, to emphasize shape around the hips and a tight tummy.

Actually, therein lies the source of misjudging a peplum: The perception that wearing extra fabric around the waist would add bulk to the area. Really, it doesn’t. The trick to this trend is thoughtful tailoring. In every single skirt, dress and blouse we sourced, the peplum is paired with a perfectly tailored bodice, which makes the wearer’s waist look ultimately petite. Since a buxom silhouette is fashionable again, with Christina Hendricks and Kim Kardashian holding Hollywood’s most cherished curves, it makes sense to see the peplum back on trend.

So long as peplum is tailored tight to the waist, you’ll be home free in finding this style flattering.
We’ve only one piece of style advice:

That skirts and dresses with peplums are probably best reserved for formal events, like a wedding or cocktail party. A pencil skirt may pass for office-wear, but only if it’s accented minimally, like our pick from ASOS down below. Blouses, on the other hand, are fair game for any occasion, and look especially cute worn with a pair of shorts and some espadrilles.

Summer fashion just got more feminine and more flattering! We love peplums! Do you?
